The Apple iPod Nano was recently released just in time for Christmas 2005. It was essentially created as an updated, smaller and lighter version of the highly successful iPod Mini. A myriad of design changes were introduced in the new Nano though, making it heads above its predecessor. To begin with, the Apple iPod Nano is nearly seventy percent smaller in volume than the iPod Mini, which in turn was much smaller than the standard iPod. Also, instead of going for the Mini’s monochrome display, the iPod Nano has a colorful display which can be used to display album art for songs as well as color photos from your computer or digital camera. Noting that the iPod Mini had some problems with its hard drive memory systems, the Apple iPod Nano now features flash memory for instant access to any songs of your choice as well as giving it the ability to not be disturbed by bouncing or jarring the product. However, this improved memory comes at a price, mainly limiting the storage space to four gigabytes when the iPod Mini was capable of storing six gigabytes of songs.
From a design perspective, the Apple iPod Nano was used as a test bed for a variety of features that would later show up in the fifth generation video iPods. The first of which is a new operating system for the iPod which gives the user access to more features commonly found on a full fledged Apple computer. These include options like a world clock, stopwatch and screenlock options (to prevent people from tampering with your Nano). Furthermore, the Apple iPod Nano was also the first iPod to be available in either white or black color schemes (not counting the U2 Special Edition) which are also the two colors available for the video iPod.
Despite the innovation however, the Apple iPod Nano had some design flaws. Firstly, people who purchased the Nano noted that there were problems with the LCD screen. It was easily cracked and scratched, rendering it useless under normal operating parameters. Also, in construction of the body, the Apple iPod Nano features a new plastic which also scratches and divots easily, even if it only rides in your pocket for short periods of time.
