Is Apple’s Latest Video iPod as Good as the Competition?

Up until a couple of years ago, all of Apple’s iPod products had monochromatic screens. This was all well and good since the player was just for music files and audio podcasts, but as technology progresses, people find that they want their favorite portable digital audio player to do more than just play music. They wanted it to display pictures and do so in high resolution. Responding to their customer’s wants, Apple came out with the iPod photo which became a big seller due to its brilliant full color screen. It was so big that the next generation of iPods all included color screens, and the added bonus of being able to play your favorite television shows, movies and video podcasts right on the iPod’s screen. The fifth generation video iPod had certainly joined the modern world, but unfortunately such advancements placed it in the line of fire of some other pretty significant portable devices.

Aside from a laptop, an iPod is really the best bet for people just breaking into the world of portable electronics. It has a nice, crisp screen with a ton of pixels and colors so you can enjoy your photos and videos in pristine quality. The quality is so good in fact, that it almost makes you forget you are watching a video on such a small screen. When you purchase either the thirty gigabyte or sixty gigabyte versions of the iPod, you will get a USB 2.0 cord for downloading songs and charging the iPod and a nifty carrying case to prevent scratching and damage to your iPod. All video iPods are available in either the standard white or new black color schemes. Unfortunately for the video iPod, when in movie watching mode, the battery life greatly diminishes to between two and three hours.

The largest competition from the iPod comes from Creative with their Zen Vision. It only comes in a thirty gigabyte version, but allows playback of far more file types than the video iPod. Additionally, the Zen Vision comes with parts that are only available as add-ons for the iPod, mainly a voice recorder and FM radio. The Zen Vision is quite a bit larger than the video iPod, however, making it not nearly as portable.
